The Play
Roleplay is the third play of a trilogy entitled Damsels in Distress. They were first premiered in September 2001,
in Scarborough and transferrer to London's West End a year later with the same company. Originally Damsels in Distress
was only intended to be a duology. These two plays, Gameplan and Flatspin, were to be staged on a repertory basis using
the same seven actors. Only when rehearsals for Flatspin had begun did Alan Ayckbourn have the idea for a third.
He then wrote Roleplay after reaching an agreement with the cast to take on another play and writing only started after
performances of Flatspin were under way. The trilogy not only using the same actors, but also the same set, a flat in
London's Docklands where Ayckbourn too, has an apartment of his own.
Despite being an afterthought of the trilogy, Roleplay earned the most praise from the critics. Some viewed it as a revival of
"Classic Ayckbourn". So, is it a return to vintage Ayckbourn territory - the dinner party from hell or is it just the
writer departing from his more familiar terrain of suburban angst to deal with metropolitan madness and moral confusion?
